CRIME PREVENTION BUREAU

McGruff the Crime DogThe Crime Prevention Bureau of the Oshkosh Police Department is dedicated to the idea of public education, crime prevention and community service. Reactive law enforcement by itself is no longer an adequate means of addressing the problems which face our community. The Crime Prevention Bureau, as well as the Oshkosh Police Department in general, has become actively involved in proactive law enforcement with a focus on community involvement and problem solving, in an effort to effectively address crime in our community.

Community involvement in the Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch and Maritime Watch programs has been an effective tool in preventing crime and in identifying community needs. Programs such as these which stress the importance of community participation, cooperation, and training will continue to be utilized in keeping our community a safe place to live.

Other proactive Crime Prevention programs which have proven to be effective in preventing community problems and in educating members of our community are the D.A.R.E. Program, Eddie Eagle (gun safety) Program, Officer Friendly, and McGruff Crime Dog Programs. Many of these programs address unique issues and specific people in an effort to develop communication, understanding, and a healthy community.

The Crime Prevention Bureau is also responsible for coordinating the departments involvement in the Oshkosh/Winnebago County Crime Stoppers Program, Operation ID and KID CARE I.D.  Volunteers are an important element in the success of our operations and a necessary ingredient in becoming more responsive to the wishes of our community. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should contact the Oshkosh Police Department Crime Prevention Bureau. Upon request, officers from the Crime Prevention Bureau provide community education and awareness programs to local business, civic groups, and citizen's organizations in an effort to address the specific needs they may have. The Crime Prevention Bureau also assumes the duty of providing competent home and business security surveys as requested.
