The Crime Prevention Unit is headed by Sergeant Steve Sagmeister and is part of the Planning, Training & Research Division within the Administrative Services Bureau. The Crime Prevention Unit participates with area community programs such as TRICOM, TRIAD, Workplace Violence, Crime Prevention Fund, File of Life, Circle of Support and the Oshkosh Area School District. The Crime Prevention Sergeant is also the department's Public Information Officer and is responsible for media contacts.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH:
Neighborhood Watch is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear in your neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch is built on the premise of watching out for each other and building that sense of community, getting to know everyone in your neighborhood. Oshkosh has over 50 Neighborhood Watch groups and is growing. If you are interested in forming a watch group in your area, please contact the Crime Prevention Bureau.

SAFETY CITY:
Safety City is a child-sized city designed to provide a complete hands-on safety education for children. The portable neighborhood consists of a working traffic signal and railroad crossing, stop signs, miniature buildings, cross walks and other street markings. Safety City is a four-day program for children ages 4-6 years old. Children can choose from either morning or afternoon sessions that last approximately three hours each day. Safety City participants receive classroom instruction as well as active participation in the Safety City neighborhood. In addition, each child receives a new bike helmet that is checked and fitted properly while at Safety City.Safety City is located at the Fox Valley Technical College - Riverside Campus - 150 N. Campbell Street - Oshkosh.

SPEED WATCH:
Speed Watch is one of several initiatives to help in reducing speeding on city streets through public awareness and community action. Trained volunteers use a radar gun to document speeding vehicles, the radar logs are turned into the police and registered owners sent a courtesy letter reminding them to slow down. You must be at least 18 years of age and completed the Speed Watch training to participate in the Speed Watch Program. If you are interested in becoming a Speed Watch volunteer, please fill out the volunteer application, check the Speed Watch box, and you will be contacted when the next training session is being held. Crime Stoppers encourages people to provide tips that can be vital to the successful solution of a crime by offering cash rewards for tips which lead to the arrest of a suspect, and by guaranteeing that the tipster’s identity remains anonymous. Callers may submit a tip via phone at 1-800-621-CASH(2274) or via the Crime Stopper website at www.winnebagocrimestoppers.org.
The Quick 50 program is offered to area schools. The purpose of the Quick 50 initiative is to increase safety in our schools by encouraging reports of weapons, drugs or alcohol on school grounds. $50 cash is paid to confidential informants that provide information leading to the arrest of persons for drugs, alcohol, weapons or bomb threats that occur on school grounds.
SEX OFFENDERS:
The Oshkosh Police Department assists the Department of Corrections with Sex Offender notifications within the city of Oshkosh. If you have questions or concerns about the process, feel free to contact us or the Department of Corrections. The Oshkosh Police Department does not list sex offenders on our website. For current sex offender information, please check the Sex offender registration website at www.widocoffenders.org. FALSE ALARMS:
The Oshkosh Police Department responds to hundreds of false alarms each year, most of the time tying up two officers per call. Responding to False Alarms is a huge drain on the Police Department’s resources and is inherently dangerous for responding officers. City ordinance 17-45(f) does charge alarm users a fee for false alarms:- First Three = No Charge
- Fourth = $25
- Fifth - Tenth = $50
- Over Ten = $100
GRAFFITI:
The Oshkosh Police Department takes graffiti very seriously. Prompt reporting and removal of graffiti is paramount in keeping our city free of graffiti. The Oshkosh Police Department hopes that you remove your graffiti as soon as possible, as graffiti may breed other graffiti. By city ordinance, section 17-37, failure to remove graffiti within 15 days could result in a $217.50 fine and/or having the Department remove the graffiti at your expense.
